2022 Canstruction® Winners
17th Annual Canstruction® Competition
“A Garden of CANstructures!”
Stay tuned for total money raised from the People's Choice Award online voting for the Hawaii FoodBank!
On September 17, eight teams of local architects and allied design and engineering professionals put their design and building skills to the test as they creatively “CANstructed” dynamic 3D structures, each made entirely of several thousand cans of food, which will be donated to Hawaii Foodbank — in AIA Honolulu’s 17th Annual Canstruction® competition at Kahala Mall.
Since its inception, AIA Honolulu’s Canstruction® event has gathered 670,028 pounds of canned goods – enough food to make 527,581 meals.
To reflect on this year’s theme, “A Garden of CANstructures.” As we returned to our first year of a “full” Canstruction, we also want to return to looking ahead and planning for our future — the future of our community and our home. In alignment with both AIA National and AIA Honolulu’s Strategic Plans, we ask teams to build structures themed around Climate Action and being a part of the (design) solution. Taking care of our community includes coming together to alleviate hunger. In this year’s Canstruction® building competition, local designers create their garden sculptures that plant the seeds toward a better tomorrow as we view the future with hope and positivity.
Structures made entirely of canned foods serve not only as a donation to the Hawaii Foodbank, but also as a collection of positive and motivational creations as we move forward embracing a healthier, resilient and more vibrant community. AIA Honolulu teams truly believe Hawaii’s design and construction industry CAN rally around this year’s theme to reflect the true value of generosity essential to our local communities and the bright days ahead.
