Dean Sakamoto Architects/SHADE is seeking project architects who have strong design/documentation and project management skills with an interest in climate-based design. DSA/SHADE is building parametric and sustainability capabilities in concert with our longstanding commitment to DESIGN EXCELLENCE. DSA/SHADE is a full-service environmental design firm and charitable foundation. Dean Sakamoto Architects (DSA) was founded in 1999 and is known for its culturally specific, environmentally concerned design solutions in the Northeast U.S. and Hawai‘i. SHADE, which stands for Sustainable Humanitarian Architecture and Design for the Earth, is a collaborative practice, with a focus on and network in the rapidly urbanizing tropical and subtropical Asia-Pacific regions. Our architectural projects include K-12 schools, university facilities, affordable housing, public libraries, financial institutions, and creative workplaces. Areas of expertise include museum-quality environments, urban multi-modal path design, and resilient design for coastal communities and buildings.

SHADE Institute, a non-profit subsidiary of DSA/SHADE, provides low-cost public interest planning and design services through its fellowship training and mentorship program and is an active component of the office environment.
DSA/SHADE’s office is in the Vladimir Ossipoff-designed King Liberty Center building in Honolulu’s Chinatown Historic District.
Job Profile
Applicants should hold a minimum of 5 years of experience using Revit software in a professional setting. Professional licensure is preferred, however, State of Hawai‘i registration is not required. Non-licensed designers must have a minimum of 3 years of professional experience which includes project management and all phases of architectural service. A professional B.Arch. or M.Arch. degree from an accredited university is required. We believe in professional development and mentorship at all levels.
Primary responsibilities include project design and production using Revit/Twin Motion, material and product research; and sustainable design certification management. Licensed architects and senior designers may supervise/mentor project designers and assistants. Secondary responsibility may include leading/implementing a practice or research initiative at DSA/SHADE. An open personality and flexible mindset are a must; the ability to be creative yet meet budgets and schedules and possess a design sensibility that is compatible with the firm. Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite software and Excel is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with a proactive approach are desired. Candidates who demonstrate successful prior project outcomes of design excellence in the application materials will receive priority consideration. Compensation will be based on experience and may be adjusted according to performance (3 month post-hire evaluation period).
Experience and/or interest in applying sustainable and humanitarian-design certification programs such as LEED, Living Building Challenge, SEED, etc. is ideal.
